Xavi Hernández, the former Barcelona head coach, was appointed Netherlands manager on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, returning to football management with a contract running through the 2030 World Cup and taking charge of a national side for the first time.

The appointment was first reported as an agreement by football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano before the Dutch federation confirmed Xavi as the new head coach. Romano described the deal as completed and said the agreement had been signed on Wednesday.
The move gives Xavi an intriguing tactical fit. His coaching philosophy has been heavily influenced by the possession-based principles associated with Johan Cruyff, a footballing tradition that has deep roots in the Netherlands as well as Barcelona.
Xavi has also made clear that he wants his teams to play attacking football based on possession and creativity.

Slot previously explained that he was not interested in taking the national-team job because he wanted to remain involved in club football, leaving the Dutch federation to pursue alternatives.
Xavi’s coaching career began at Al Sadd in Qatar before he returned to Barcelona, where he took charge of the club’s first team in November 2021.
His Barcelona tenure produced a LaLiga title and the Spanish Super Cup, although his time at the Catalan club also included periods of intense pressure and inconsistency.
His return to management therefore presents an opportunity to reshape his reputation on an international stage.
The Netherlands job will require Xavi to adapt his methods to the rhythm of international football, where coaches have limited training time with players and must build a coherent system around a squad assembled only periodically.
That challenge could also suit his footballing background. As a former Spain international and one of the most influential midfielders of his generation, Xavi spent much of his playing career operating within a possession-oriented system built around technical quality, movement and control.
