The NDC presidential candidate says his bid is driven by the need to tackle Nigeria’s economic and social challenges as the 2027 campaign season opens.

Peter Obi launches 2027 campaign with ‘Nigeria must work’ pledge

Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi on Friday, August 21, 2026, formally entered the 2027 presidential campaign, declaring that his bid is centred on addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges and making the country “work”.

The declaration came as political campaigns for the 2027 presidential election officially commenced, opening a new phase in what is expected to be a closely watched contest among Nigeria’s major political figures.

Obi presented his ambition as a response to the difficulties facing Nigerians rather than a pursuit of personal political advancement.

“I consider myself to be among those contesting to address the challenges Nigeria is currently facing. I join this contest with one firm conviction: Nigeria must work,” Obi said while addressing Nigerians.

The campaign is expected to place strong emphasis on economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, education and the wider standard of living, issues that have remained central to public debate ahead of the election.

Obi, who represented the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election, built significant support among young Nigerians during that contest. His performance also helped establish him as a major opposition voice and a prominent figure in Nigeria’s emerging political realignment.

For 2027, however, the challenge will be broader. Obi will be seeking to translate the enthusiasm generated during the 2023 election into a wider coalition capable of competing across Nigeria’s diverse political landscape.

His choice of former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso as running mate has also added a significant northern dimension to the ticket.

Kwankwaso has urged Nigerians to support the joint bid, pointing to rising living costs, unemployment, insecurity and economic uncertainty as problems requiring urgent attention.

The campaign begins against the backdrop of intense political activity across the country, with President Bola Tinubu and other leading figures expected to face growing competition as parties and candidates mobilise voters.

Obi and other presidential contenders had also signed the National Peace Accord ahead of the campaign period, committing themselves to peaceful and issue-based political engagement.

The agreement comes with renewed attention on the tone of the 2027 race, particularly as political parties begin taking their messages directly to voters.

For Obi, the central challenge will be turning the powerful appeal of his message into a convincing national political project.

His declaration that “Nigeria must work” offers a simple campaign theme, but the months ahead will test how effectively that promise can be translated into detailed policies and broader voter support.
