Powerful Google Nigeria commitment brings N3bn for AI talent and digital safety, supporting the nation’s tech transformation
According to officials at a Lagos press conference on Friday, a Powerful Google Nigeria commitment will see Google.org invest N3bn to accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation, with a special focus on artificial intelligence training and online safety.

The initiative is anchored on a dual strategy that channels funding through five respected local organisations: FATE Foundation, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences, the African Technology Forum, Junior Achievement Africa and the CyberSafe Foundation.
By combining talent development with stronger digital security, the technology giant aims to bolster the country’s workforce while creating a safer digital environment.
Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy Bosun Tijani said the investment aligns tightly with the government’s vision for a more productive, globally competitive economy powered by advanced technologies.
He described AI as central to Nigeria’s innovation ambitions and welcomed the partnership as timely and meaningful.
To grow AI expertise, FATE Foundation and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences will integrate advanced AI curricula into universities, equipping students and lecturers with cutting edge knowledge.
The African Technology Forum will introduce an innovation challenge that helps developers translate learning into practical, real world AI applications.
FATE Foundation Executive Director Adenike Adeyemi said the upskilling project meets an urgent need for deep AI competencies across Africa.
She described the initiative as a catalyst for sustainable growth, ensuring that universities in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa are better prepared to contribute to the global technology landscape.
On the safety front, Junior Achievement Africa will broaden its Be Internet Awesome curriculum for younger audiences, teaching responsible digital habits.
The CyberSafe Foundation will concentrate on enhancing the cybersecurity resilience of public institutions to protect critical data and infrastructure.
Officials noted that the initiative supports Nigeria’s National AI Strategy and its goal of creating one million digital jobs.
Research from Public First projects that AI could unlock 15 billion dollars in economic value for Nigeria by 2030, reinforcing the importance of building skills and secure systems.
Google’s Director for West Africa, Olumide Balogun, said the N3bn pledge builds on years of partnership, including infrastructure improvements such as the Equiano subsea cable and initiatives like the 2023 Skills Sprint programme.
That effort trained over twenty thousand Nigerians in AI and tech and supported thousands into jobs or business ventures.

Balogun said the latest commitment is an investment in people, aimed at empowering them with advanced AI capabilities and ensuring they can thrive within a secure digital ecosystem.
