‘Textbooks for marks’ MAPOLY demands tax clearance, N10K+ from students before exams (Photo)

The students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, have lamented what has been described as inhuman treatment from the management of the school over pre-condition given to them before they could sit for their second semester examinations.

According to one of the students, Sola (not real name), the school had mandated that each of the students must submit tax clearance certificate before they could be allowed into examination hall.

“We must submit our parents’ tax certificate before we would be allowed to do anything at the school, and this second semester examination inclusive,” she lamented.

Freelanews can exclusively report that both full time and part time students are affected by this development.

Our source also revealed that some of the National Diploma students were wailing yesterday afternoon, March 9, 2021, because they were barred from taking their examinations.

“We’re all affected by this development.

“If you’re a non-indigene of Ogun State, you must pay ten thousand and three hundred naira (N10,300) before you can sit for examinations unless you are able to find certificate that carries your surname; so most students impersonate.

“And as indigene, you pay a fine of ten thousand and two hundred naira (N10,200) if your parents have the tax clearance certificate. Even when they do but they file less than N10,000, you are mandated to pay N5000 extra, in spite of the certificate,” she explained.

Sola also confirmed to Freelanews that this is aside the school fees of N85,000 for part time students and over N50,000 for full time.

“Aside the school fees, there are other sundry payments and textbooks which are compulsory because lecturers award marks based on purchase,” she also added.

The polytechnic was formally established in 1980 as Ogun State Polytechnic during the military administration of Harris Eghagha, but the first set of 220 students was admitted in January 1979. The Polytechnic started on two temporary campuses, Oke-Egunya and Onikolobo, moving to the Ojere campus between April 1985 and March 1988.

The school boasts of former governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun, popular filmmaker, Funke Akindele, and veteran journalist, Kayode Akintemi, among others as some of its past students.

The hapless students are, therefore, appealing to the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, to urgently address the tax-clearance-for-exam practice as some students may have allegedly missed out on their examinations, which started March 3, 2021.
