Akinloye Tofowomo death shocks Nigeria as the Shuga Band founder dies in Canada after battling colon cancer at age 50

Akinloye Tofowomo death has left Nigeria’s entertainment scene in shock following confirmation that the Shuga Band founder passed away in Canada after a brief but tough battle with colon cancer.

According to the family, the music icon, popularly known as Akin Shuga, died on Thursday, 30 October 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada, at the age of 50.

His passing marks the end of a remarkable journey defined by resilience, rhythm, and reinvention.

A close family source told Freelanews that Akinloye Tofowomo was diagnosed with colon cancer in July 2025 at a private hospital in Lagos. Doctors advised immediate surgery as the only possible option.

Soon after, he travelled to Canada, where his family resides, to prepare for the procedure scheduled for 30 October. Sadly, he died on the same day due to surgical complications.

Only weeks before his death, the celebrated performer had completed a multimillion-naira mansion at NIHORT GRA, Ibadan; a testament to his enduring spirit and success story.

His family described him as “a revered music icon, grandmaster, and custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance.”

Born on 6 January 1975 in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, Akinloye Tofowomo’s story was one of triumph over adversity. Having contracted polio at the age of five, he refused to let physical limitations define his life. Instead, he channelled his passion into music, founding the legendary Shuga Band in 1998 at Pintos Bar, Ikeja, Lagos.

What began as a small ensemble of dreamers quickly grew into a 14-member powerhouse, known for electrifying performances at weddings, corporate functions, and state events. Under his leadership, Shuga Entertainment became a symbol of excellence, professionalism, and joy in Nigeria’s live music industry.

Beyond his performances, Akinloye Tofowomo was a driving force for change. He founded and served as President of the Association of Music Band Owners of Nigeria (AMBON), advocating for better welfare and standards within the live entertainment ecosystem.

His death leaves a profound void in the Nigerian creative community; not just as a performer but as a mentor, entrepreneur, and visionary who inspired countless young musicians.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the country, Akinloye Tofowomo’s legacy endures through every beat, every stage, and every soul he touched with his rhythm.
