Alexander Isak Newcastle strike continues as striker joins Sweden squad for World Cup qualifiers, despite push to force Liverpool move
Alexander Isak Newcastle strike headlines have taken a new twist after the striker was surprisingly named in Sweden’s World Cup qualifying squad, despite his ongoing standoff with Newcastle United and lack of first-team action this season.

The 25-year-old forward has been training away from Eddie Howe’s squad in protest, accusing the club of breaking promises related to a summer transfer — reportedly to Liverpool, who had a £110 million bid rejected earlier this month.
Yet despite having not played a single minute of club football this season, Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson has shown faith in the player’s abilities, calling him up for matches against Slovenia and Kosovo.
“The situation he is in is not perfect, and he has not trained with the team,” Tomasson admitted.
“But he is a player who can decide matches, and the World Cup is important for Alexander Isak.”
Isak’s move to Liverpool remains a hot topic, with reports suggesting a second offer is in the works before the transfer window closes.
The striker, who has grown frustrated with Newcastle’s stance, made his feelings known publicly.
“The relationship can’t continue,” he said in a recent social media statement, making it clear he wants out of St. James’ Park.
Newcastle, however, deny making any promises to allow his departure and remain firm that Isak is not for sale.
While his club future remains uncertain, Sweden is betting on Isak’s talent, hoping the Liverpool-linked forward can contribute even after weeks on the sidelines.
He joins Viktor Gyokeres, fresh off scoring a brace for Arsenal, as one of the key attacking options in Sweden’s campaign to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

The situation sets up a dramatic international break where Isak may return to competitive action for his country, even as his standoff with Newcastle shows no signs of resolution.
