The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Nmesoma Josephine Nwoye, 23, and her boyfriend Chibuike Ogbu, 24.
The duo allegedly conspired to fake Nmesoma’s kidnap, demanding a ransom of ₦15 million. Following negotiations, her family transferred ₦3 million, with police later recovering ₦1.2 million from the suspects.
Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement released Saturday, said the lovers were tracked down through intelligence-led operations carried out by the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described the act as a disturbing reflection of moral decadence among youths.
He emphasized that society must rise to instill discipline and integrity in young people to curb self-destructive ventures like staged crimes.
“The long arm of the law will always catch up with criminals, no matter how cleverly disguised their schemes may be,” CP Orutugu warned.
The police urged parents, guardians, and religious leaders to reinforce values that discourage greed and dishonesty.
Authorities also cautioned young people against falling into the trap of quick-money ventures that ultimately lead to disgrace and prosecution.
