The announcement was made during the Union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress, which held on Sunday in Benin.
Prof. Piwuna succeeds Prof. Victor Emmanuel Osodeke, a Professor of Soil Science from the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, who had led the union through some of the most challenging negotiations with the Federal Government in recent years.
The election was contested between Piwuna and Prof. Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
Prof. Piwuna’s emergence as ASUU’s new leader comes at a critical juncture, as tensions mount over unresolved issues such as the sharing formula for the recently released Earned Academic Allowances, concerns over brain drain, and lingering fears of a potential industrial action.
As a seasoned academic and administrator, Prof. Piwuna brings to the role not only medical expertise but also years of advocacy and student engagement.
