Founder of Anap Foundation and Stanbic IBTC, Atedo Peterside, has weighed in on former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida’s revelation that late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola won the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election.
Babangida’s admission is documented in his newly launched autobiography, A Journey in Service, unveiled in Abuja.
The book marks the first time the former Head of State has publicly acknowledged Abiola’s victory, more than three decades after the controversial annulment.
The 420-page memoir details Babangida’s governance, policies, and key national events, including his decision to annul Nigeria’s most credible election.
Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who reviewed the book, highlighted Babangida’s acknowledgment, citing the detailed election results published in the memoir.
Babangida admitted Abiola secured 8,128,720 votes against Bashir Tofa’s 5,848,247, fulfilling the required geographical spread. The revelation sparked nationwide reactions, with analysts and historians debating its significance.
Reacting on X, Peterside questioned the timing of the admission, stating: “Are we supposed to clap because he told the truth after three decades?”
His statement reflects widespread skepticism regarding the late acknowledgment of a well-documented political event.
