On Monday, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia officially inaugurated 23 newly elected local government chairmen, charging them to prioritise integrity, transparency, and fairness in governance.
The chairmen, elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), were declared winners in the local government elections held on Saturday.
Governor Alia, during the inauguration ceremony, reminded the new chairmen of the significant responsibility they bear, urging them to provide strategic leadership and adhere to the highest standards of governance.
“As you step into these roles, I charge you on a mission of utmost importance. Your duties require diligence, strategic leadership, and upholding the highest standards of governance without fear or favour,” he said.
He emphasised that their roles demand integrity, foresight, and dedication to principles of accountability and fairness.
The governor also advised them to build on the developmental progress achieved by the outgoing caretaker committees and always prioritise the needs of their constituents. He urged them to engage in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders and avoid personal gains in leadership.
Governor Alia highlighted the need for collaboration between local governments and the state, especially in light of the newly granted local government autonomy. He encouraged the chairmen to work closely with the state government to implement policies that will benefit rural communities and support the shared vision of improving Benue State.
As the time for politicking has passed, Governor Alia urged the chairmen to hit the ground running and extend an olive branch to the opposition, welcoming constructive criticism to strengthen democracy and good governance across the state.
