The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Niger State has urged the Federal Government to lower fuel prices and regulate the cost of food items. This appeal was made by Most Reverend Bulus Yohanna, the State Chairman of CAN, during a message delivered in Minna.
Yohanna advised against participating in the proposed nationwide protest, emphasizing that violence and unrest have historically led to negative outcomes. He stressed that peaceful dialogue and prayer are more effective means of addressing the nation’s challenges. Yohanna also expressed concerns that protests could be hijacked by miscreants, potentially leading to violence and harm.
In his address, Yohanna also called on President Bola Tinubu to reduce petrol prices and regulate food costs to alleviate the rising cost of living and improve conditions for Nigerians. He encouraged the people of Niger State to focus on farming during the current agricultural season, supported by the proactive efforts of the state’s Governor.
In related comments, Rev. John Hayab, former Chairman of CAN in Kaduna State, advised against actions that could disrupt Nigeria’s progress.
Hayab acknowledged the right to protest but warned that it could lead to violence and instability. He questioned the motivations behind the planned protest, suggesting it might be more about political maneuvering than addressing genuine issues like poverty.
Hayab noted that while the protest aims to address poverty, it is important to focus on regions with high poverty rates, such as Zamfara, Yobe, and other areas with severe economic challenges. He expressed concerns that the protest could be more about political gain than actual solutions for the country’s problems.
