The incident, described by relatives as sudden and deeply shocking, unfolded on Pebble Street on the night of 11 November 2025.
The deceased, Samuel Eweni, was a respected computer sciences professor at Southern University at New Orleans.
Family members told local outlet WWL Louisiana that the attack came without warning, despite the suspect having a known history of mental illness.
They stressed that he had never previously displayed violent behaviour.
According to WWL Louisiana, both injured sisters were taken to hospital shortly after the incident. One has since been discharged, while the other remains admitted but is expected to recover fully.
The New Orleans Police Department confirmed that Eweni, 27, was located in Jefferson Parish and placed under law enforcement custody while undergoing a medical evaluation.
In a statement obtained by PUNCH Online, the department outlined the sequence of events and emphasised that the attack was domestic in nature.
Police officers were called to the scene at around 9:59pm following reports of an aggravated battery involving a sharp weapon.
Upon arrival, they found the unresponsive body of Samuel Eweni, who had suffered at least one fatal stab wound.
Two additional adult victims were discovered with stab injuries and were promptly transported to hospital.
Investigators have since identified the suspect as the perpetrator. Detectives from the NOPD Homicide Section obtained an arrest warrant for one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.
The department initially warned that he was believed to be armed and dangerous.
Authorities added that the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will formally identify the deceased and determine the official cause of death after completing an autopsy and notifying next of kin.
The attack has left relatives and neighbours reeling, with many struggling to comprehend how a family known for quiet scholarship and calm living could be struck by such a devastating tragedy.
