The family of Dan Agbese, veteran journalist and Newswatch co-founder, announces burial arrangements following his passing at 81
The family of Chief Dan Agbese, renowned journalist and co-founder of Newswatch magazine, has released the burial arrangements following his death on Monday, November 17, 2025. Agbese passed away at the age of 81.

In a statement from the Ikpilogwu clan of Agila district, Ado Local Government Area, the family said: “We hereby announce the passing away of our husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and mentor: Chief Dan Agbese, the Awan’Otun of Agila. Chief Agbese transited to eternal glory this morning, Monday, November 17, 2025. He was aged 81.”
The family confirmed that the burial will hold on Saturday, December 13, 2025, in Agila, Benue State, with details of the service to be communicated to invited guests and the public.
Agbese was widely recognised as one of Nigeria’s most influential journalists, noted for his sharp intellect, satirical writing style, and landmark contributions to the media industry.
He served as editor of The Nigeria Standard and New Nigerian newspapers, and later became General Manager of Radio Benue, Makurdi.
A prolific writer, Agbese authored several books and maintained weekly columns in major national dailies, including Daily Trust and The Guardian.

Until his passing, he also ran a media consultancy alongside long-time colleagues Ray Ekpu, Yakubu Muhammed, and Soji Akinrinade.
