In response to the ongoing protest in Ughelli, Delta State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Bright Edafe issued a statement on behalf of the command, shedding light on the events surrounding the demonstration and the police’s response.
Edafe began by informing the public that on the 13th of February 2024, policemen from the Ughelli Area Command intercepted an unregistered Benz GLK without a plate number in the Ekuigbo community.
Upon encountering the vehicle, officers confronted the four occupants who failed to provide proof of ownership. As the police attempted to arrest them, the situation turned volatile, with some youths attacking the officers. The resulting altercation led to the destruction of the police vehicle and the injury of one officer, who sustained head injuries.
Highlighting the severity of the incident, Edafe revealed that nine suspects were apprehended in connection to the altercation and are set to face charges in court. He emphasized that such actions would not be tolerated and reaffirmed the police’s commitment to upholding law and order in the region.
The statement comes amidst allegations of police brutality, with the hashtag ENDSARS resurfacing in connection to the Ughelli protest.
Edafe addressed these concerns, urging youths to refrain from engaging in protests and assuring the public that the police force remains steadfast in their duty to serve and protect the community.
