The Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa, packed with 80,000 passionate fans, turned chaotic Tuesday evening after the Leopards blew a 2–0 first-half lead.
In frustration, fans ripped out seats and hurled them onto the pitch, forcing overwhelmed security to scramble for control.
No injuries were reported, but stadium officials confirmed extensive damage to seating and infrastructure.
DR Congo stormed ahead with two goals in quick succession — Cédric Bakambu opened the scoring in the 26th minute, followed by Yoane Wissa in the 33rd, lifting the home crowd into euphoric belief.
But Senegal, the 2021 AFCON champions, showcased elite resilience. Pape Gueye pulled one back before halftime (39′), Nicolas Jackson equalized on the hour mark (59′), and Pape Matar Sarr completed the comeback with a heartbreaking 89th-minute winner.
The defeat dramatically altered Group B standings:
- Senegal top the group with 18 points
- DR Congo slip to second with 16
- Sudan sit third with 12, effectively out of the race
Only group winners qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
DR Congo must now fight for one of four playoff spots reserved for the best group runners-up.
“This was more than just a match — it was a dream undone in 90 minutes,” said a local football analyst in Kinshasa.
The DR Congo fans riot has sparked broader concerns over stadium security, fan management, and the emotional volatility surrounding major qualifiers on the African continent.
The Congolese Football Federation is expected to face sanctions or fines from CAF and FIFA, pending further investigation into the vandalism.

Despite the disappointment, fans are holding onto slim hopes of qualifying through the playoffs. The Leopards will need to win their remaining fixtures decisively and hope results elsewhere go their way.
