Over the past two weeks, Johnson has seen a staggering loss of up to 250,000 followers per hour, sparked by a trend initiated by disillusioned fans dubbing him “The Fakest Celebrity” and “Dwayne The Ad Johnson.”
Once hailed as “Hollywood’s last superstar,” Johnson’s reputation has come under scrutiny as fans allege that over 75% of his social media posts are advertisements, meticulously planned and lacking in authenticity.
The tipping point came with his recent “In and Out” ad, where Johnson claimed it was his first time eating at the restaurant, despite a similar ad from 2022 still prominently featured on his Instagram.
This revelation fueled further skepticism among fans, who began to question the sincerity of Johnson’s interactions and endorsements.
The backlash intensified when accusations surfaced of Johnson inserting himself into WWE WrestleMania scripts, alienating his younger fanbase.
Adding fuel to the fire, Johnson faced criticism for allegedly imposing himself as a franchise star in the D.C Superhero Universe, further eroding his credibility among fans.
Even his partnership with media mogul Oprah Winfrey for a Maui fundraiser was met with skepticism, with some branding him “tone-deaf.”
The final blow came with a viral video showing Johnson claiming it was his first time at “In and Out” on two separate occasions, leading to accusations of disingenuousness and exacerbating the trend of unfollows.
