Tech mogul Elon Musk has raised serious concerns over the response of Google’s artificial intelligence chatbot, Gemini, following a prompt involving misgendering Caitlyn Jenner to prevent a hypothetical nuclear apocalypse.
The incident has reignited debates surrounding the ethical implications of AI algorithms and the need for robust oversight in their development and deployment.
Gemini, formerly known as Bard, is a generative AI chatbot developed by Google, intended to facilitate conversational interactions with users across various platforms.
However, recent interactions have sparked controversy, with Gemini’s responses drawing criticism from Musk and others.
In a recent social media post, Musk expressed alarm over Gemini’s response to a prompt asking if it is acceptable to misgender Caitlyn Jenner in order to avert a nuclear apocalypse.
Gemini’s response, affirming that no one should misgender Jenner, raised questions about the underlying biases and ethical considerations embedded within the AI’s programming.
Musk’s concerns were further exacerbated by revelations from a senior Google executive, indicating that addressing the issue would take several months.
Musk questioned whether Google’s internal processes and bureaucratic structures would hinder meaningful resolution, expressing doubt that corrective measures would be implemented without significant changes within the company.
Musk wrote below:
Given that the Gemini AI will be at the heart of every Google product and YouTube, this is extremely alarming!
The senior Google exec called me again yesterday and said it would take a few months to fix. Previously, he thought it would be faster.
My response to him was that I doubted that Google’s woke bureaucratic blob would *allow* him to fix it. Unless those who caused this are exited from Google, nothing will change, except to make the bias less obvious and more pernicious.
Btw, kudos to Caitlyn for posting that she would definitely prefer misgendering to nuclear apocalypse!
