Peter Fregene, former goalkeeper for Nigeria’s national team, is currently on life support at a hospital in Ohara, Delta State.
His condition is critical, and Nigerian football icon Segun Odegbami has called for prayers and support. Fregene, who played for the Super Eagles from 1968 to 1971 and represented Nigeria at the 1968 Olympics, has struggled with health problems for several years.
Earlier this week, Odegbami raised the alarm about Fregene’s deteriorating condition, appealing for urgent medical attention and financial help.
Following this, many Nigerians have responded with concern. Odegbami clarified that while he is not involved in fundraising, several people have offered assistance for Fregene’s treatment.
Fregene’s plight has reignited discussions about the welfare of retired athletes in Nigeria. Odegbami has long advocated for a structured welfare system to support former sportspeople, questioning why such schemes are not in place to assist athletes in their later years.
Fregene’s legacy in Nigerian football is enduring, having been recalled to the national team for the 1982 African Cup of Nations finals.
His current health battle highlights the harsh realities many retired athletes face, bringing the need for support into sharp focus.
