Eyewitness accounts describe a harrowing experience, with bystanders running from the area in panic. “I was nearby when I heard a loud bang,” said Gyang Buba, a clothes vendor in the vicinity.
“People were running and screaming. It was terrifying,” he added, confirming the intensity of the blast.
Initial reports indicate several injuries, though details on fatalities remain unconfirmed. Emergency services, including police, fire, and ambulance teams, responded swiftly to the incident, offering medical assistance to the injured and cordoning off the area to begin a full investigation.
The Plateau State Police Command has yet to release an official statement on the explosion. Efforts to reach Command spokesman Alabo Alfred were unsuccessful, though security sources at police headquarters in Jos confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the blast.
“We urge calm and assure the public that we will do everything possible to ensure their safety,” stated a security source, adding that the area would remain restricted to facilitate the investigation.
The incident has reignited security concerns among Jos residents, who have faced periodic violence and unrest in recent years.
Local communities are now calling on authorities to strengthen security measures to prevent further incidents and ensure public safety.
