From Ibadan streets to Afrobeat dreams: The rise of Oyadeji Segun Styling

In the heart of Ibadan, Nigeria, a young boy once scribbled lyrics in notebooks between helping his mother with chores and dreaming of a life far beyond the horizon.

That boy is now known to the world as Styling, the emerging Afrobeat artist whose sound is as real as his story.

Oyadeji Segun John, born on July 9, 1996, is not just another name riding the Afrobeat wave. He is its reflection, raw, rhythmic, and rooted in experience. Hailing from Ada in Osun State but born and bred in Ibadan, Styling’s path has been anything but conventional.

He is the first child and only son in a family of four, raised by Mr. Nathaniel and Mrs. Florence Oyadeji. From an early age, he bore the weight of expectations and the dreams of a household. Education came first. He began at Divine Favors International School, now known as The Gems Academy, and continued at Mount Olivet Grammar School, a public institution that, like him, stood resilient in a changing world. His academic path led him to a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Osun State University, Osogbo.

Before embracing music full-time, Styling lived many lives. He was a teacher, a poultry farmer, an entrepreneur, a fashion designer, and the proud owner of Styles Street Saloon. He even modeled for brands, another thread in the rich tapestry of his journey. Amidst these roles, he founded STYLING Entertainment during his university years, managing three artists before financial and personal setbacks put the dream on hold.

Yet, what life tried to delay, faith reignited. His unwavering belief in Jesus Christ, coupled with his unshakeable determination, became the fuel for his comeback. In October 2023, he officially stepped into the limelight with the release of his debut EP, Vibes of Life a deeply personal project exploring love, loss, and self-discovery. The standout track, “Ibolowa,” quickly became a fan favorite for its emotional depth and soulful delivery.

With growing momentum, he followed up in April 2024 with “African Girls,” his first single and music video, celebrating the beauty and strength of women across the continent. In May, “Sweet Criminal,” a collaboration with Fally Y, showed off his versatility, blending seductive rhythms with infectious hooks.

September brought “Time2Shine,” a bold statement of intent. And in February 2025, Styling released “Hallelujah,” a track that merged faith and funk, resonating far beyond Nigeria’s borders.

Styling doesn’t just make music. He tells stories, his own and those of countless others navigating hope, heartbreak, and hustle. His songs speak to everyone: children dancing on dusty streets, youth finding their voice, adults remembering where they came from.

When he’s not in the studio, you might find him watching football, although, as he jokes, the game doesn’t always bring him peace. He’s also an avid reader, crediting Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki for transforming his mindset and igniting the spark of entrepreneurship that still drives him today.

Looking to the future, Styling is dreaming big. Music is just the beginning. He envisions himself as an author, a philosopher, perhaps even a politician or psychologist, not for power, but to heal and uplift. “I just want to help people,” he says, “to be a light in dark places.”

In a world often rushing toward the next big thing, Styling is building something timeless, a legacy grounded in truth, faith, and the belief that no story is too small to matter.

As the beat of Afrobeat continues to pulse across the globe, one thing is clear: his time is now.
