George Akume blasts Peter Obi

George Akume blasts Peter Obi, saying the former Anambra governor failed to rescue his state and cannot rescue Nigeria from its challenges

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has taken a swipe at former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, questioning his claim of wanting to “rescue Nigeria.”

Speaking to journalists on Friday in Abuja, Akume said Obi lacked the record to lead such a national mission, alleging that he failed to “rescue Anambra” during his tenure as governor.

“If Peter Obi could not rescue Anambra, he’s talking of rescuing the 36 states and Abuja,” Akume said.

The SGF emphasised that President Bola Tinubu had inherited a struggling economy but was steering Nigeria back to stability, citing reported growth in the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“I know he inherited a very bad economy, but we are out of it. Today, our GDP has grown by 4.4%. What are people hanging around talking about—coming to rescue Nigeria? Which Nigeria?” he asked.

Akume described Tinubu as a unifying leader committed to national progress across religious and ethnic divides.
“He’s a Muslim but at peace with all of us—Christians, Muslims, and traditionalists.

Nigeria is a huge country on the move, and under his direction, we know that we are going to reach the promised land,” the SGF said.

He also took aim at unnamed politicians, implying that some could not even gain political traction in their home states.

“For other people, I don’t want to mention their names. They came, they saw, they didn’t conquer even in their states,” Akume added.

His remarks come amid rising political rhetoric as opposition leaders continue to criticise the federal government’s handling of the economy and governance.
