Gunmen suspected to be affiliated with separatist groups launched an attack on the Ogbaru Local Government Area secretariat in Anambra State, setting ablaze approximately six vehicles. The incident, which occurred yesterday morning, has been confirmed by the Anambra State Police Command.
Videos circulating on social media depict the aftermath of the attack, showing multiple vehicles engulfed in flames within the secretariat premises. Authorities have described the assault as a cowardly act.
In a statement, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, relayed the details provided by Commissioner CP Nnaghe Obono Itam. He confirmed that the assailants, arriving in large numbers on motorcycles and a vehicle, initiated indiscriminate shooting upon arrival. However, they encountered fierce resistance from vigilant operatives and eventually fled upon the arrival of police response teams.
Despite no casualties reported, four patrol vehicles belonging to vigilante operatives were destroyed in the attack. The statement emphasized the swift response of security forces and ongoing efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.
A joint security force comprising the Army, Navy, and other agencies conducted an immediate assessment of the scene, with intensified operations underway to track down the gunmen responsible.
The Commissioner of Police commended the bravery of security operatives involved in repelling the attack and assured the public of continued collaborative efforts to combat criminal activities in Anambra State.
