Residents of the Woliwo community in the Onitsha South local government area of Anambra State were left dismayed as heavy rainfall reportedly washed away the newly constructed Ochanja Market Road, just a week after its completion under the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

A viral video circulated by SaharaReporters on Monday night depicted the aftermath of the downpour, revealing the coated asphalt peeled away with scattered pieces and waterlogging on several sections of the road.

Expressing their concerns, residents lamented the apparent poor quality of the road construction projects undertaken by the Soludo administration, despite significant investments from taxpayers’ money. They questioned how a mere 20-minute rainfall could result in such extensive damage to a road recently completed, raising doubts about the durability and effectiveness of other government-executed projects.

The incident reignited discussions about the construction standards and oversight mechanisms in place for public infrastructure projects. Criticisms mounted as social media posts highlighted previous incidents of substandard construction work, including the collapse of a government-built storey building at Ochanja Market, which claimed lives.

While the state government has yet to issue a formal response to the viral video and the concerns raised by residents, questions linger regarding the accountability and transparency surrounding infrastructure development initiatives in Anambra State.
