John Obi Mikel, former Super Eagles midfielder, has joined Al-Kuwait Sporting Club in Asia.

The Asian side announced the former Chelsea player’s signing on their official social media handle on Thursday evening.

“Welcome @mikel_john-obi to club Kuwait. The Royal Brigadier General,” the tweet read.

Stoke City also confirmed Mikel’s departure in a statement on its Twitter handle.

Despite renewing his contract with the Potters, Stoke City said the contract the club has with the 34-year-old former Nigerian international midfield player has been terminated by mutual consent.

The Club can confirm that John Obi Mikel has left the Club.

Reacting to the development, Michael O’Neill, Stoke City manager, said: “Although John triggered the second year of his contract, we always had an agreement in place whereby we would let him leave if a significant overseas opportunity came along.

“John is a fantastic professional and was a huge presence for us last season both on and off the field, particularly with the young players in our first-team squad.

“I really enjoyed working with him and would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his contribution and wish him every success for the future.”

Mikel’s new football club has won the Kuwaiti Premier League (KPL) 15 times.

The Brigadiers in their sixty years of existence have secured 47 trophies to their name in the KPL.
