[dropcap]R[/dropcap]eno Omokri has publicly criticized Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), for his frequent calls for national strikes and his demand for a ₦494,000 minimum wage. Omokri argues that Ajaero’s actions are causing national strife and are politically motivated.
Omokri points out that Ajaero has called for eight strikes this year, more than the last three NLC Presidents combined. He humorously suggests that if Ajaero is so intent on striking, he might consider a career in football, competing with legends like Messi and Ronaldo for the title of greatest striker.

The Organised Private Sector (OPS), representing Nigeria’s manufacturing base, has stated that it cannot afford the proposed ₦494,000 wage. Instead, the OPS has suggested a more feasible ₦60,000 minimum wage. Omokri agrees that the government could potentially go as high as ₦80,000, but ₦494,000 is seen as excessive and an attempt by Ajaero to please his political ally, Peter Obi.
Omokri questions the rationale behind a 1600% increase in the minimum wage, noting that Nigeria’s revenue, production capacity, and tax base have not expanded by the same margin. He accuses Ajaero of potentially sabotaging the economy to benefit Peter Obi in the 2027 elections, labeling Ajaero as a politician disguised as a union leader.
Omokri suggests that Ajaero should leave labour unionism and formally join Peter Obi’s political movement. He emphasizes that Ajaero’s demands and actions could undermine Nigeria’s economic stability, urging a more balanced approach to workers’ rights and economic sustainability.
As the debate continues, Nigeria faces significant challenges in balancing the demands of its workforce with the need for economic stability. The resolution of this conflict will have far-reaching implications for the country’s future.

Joe Ajaero’s national strike will only cause national strife. This is the eighth strike Ajaero is calling this year. He has called more strikes than the last three NLC Presidents combined! If he wants to be a striker, let him go and become a footballer. He can then compete with Messi and Ronaldo on who is the GOAT striker.
Even the Organised Private Sector, the manufacturing base of Nigeria, have publicly said they cannot pay ₦494,000, and patriotically suggested ₦60,000, which is a reasonable amount. I even think the government should go as high as ₦80,000. But ₦494,000 is just outrageous and an attempt by Joe Ajaero to please his master, Peter Obi, who himself pays his own workers at Next Supermarket peanuts.
How can any reasonable person demand that the minimum wage should increase by 1600%? Has Nigeria’s revenue, production capacity, or tax base expanded by 1600%? Is Joe Ajaero an economic saboteur who wants to crash our economy to make it easy for his boss in the 2027 election?
Ajaero is a politician. He should leave labour unionism and join Peter Obi’s political movement.
