Kadiri Ikhana critical condition prompts urgent medical care at Irrua hospital. The 1980 AFCON hero now battles for life, raising concern over athlete welfare

Nigerian football legend Kadiri Ikhana is in critical condition, currently receiving emergency treatment at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Auchi, Edo State.

The 68-year-old Kadiri Ikhana critical condition situation has drawn widespread concern, as he undergoes intensive care and blood transfusion.

Ikhana, a key figure in Nigeria’s historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations victory, was transferred to the specialist facility after his health deteriorated sharply.

Segun Odegbami, a former national team captain, confirmed the news on Monday morning.

“Kadiri Ikhana has been transferred to the specialist hospital after his condition deteriorated significantly,” Odegbami revealed.

The former Super Eagles defender had been receiving private care, with former South-South Police Service Commission Chairman Austin Braimoh covering his rising medical expenses.

Ikhana, affectionately known as “Kawawa,” was instrumental in Nigeria’s first AFCON title and later built an illustrious coaching career.

He played for Bendel Insurance FC during the late 1970s and rose to national prominence as a formidable defender.

After retiring, he guided numerous local clubs to success and mentored young players across the country. His contributions earned him the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger.

Despite his achievements, Ikhana’s condition highlights the continuing neglect of retired athletes in Nigeria.

His struggle comes just two weeks after the passing of former goalkeeper Peter Rufai at 61, raising fresh concerns about healthcare support for ex-internationals.

Stakeholders across the football community are now urging authorities to establish structured welfare packages for retired players who once brought glory to the nation.
