The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, gave the order during an inspection tour of project sites on Lagos Island, Somolu, and Iwaya. The visit formed part of the state’s broader effort to tackle flooding and improve urban living conditions.
Wahab explained that the projects—jointly undertaken by the Office of Infrastructure, the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources—are designed to deliver long-term flood relief and sustainable infrastructure.
“I have given firm instructions to the contractors to stick to the agreed timelines and maintain top-quality standards,” Wahab said.
“We also visited Iwaya and the UNILAG–Lagoon confluence to address recurring flood challenges. This axis will receive priority attention in next year’s budget, with major canals and drainages dredged for proper water discharge.”
He noted that while the projects have varying completion dates, collaboration among agencies remains seamless. “Julius Berger is doing what has to be done. The Ministry of Environment is doing what has to be done. LASURA and the Ministry of Urban and Regional Planning are doing what has to be done, and we are in sync,” he said, stressing the importance of timely delivery.
Wahab added that the ministry’s team conducts regular site visits to monitor progress and ensure community involvement.
He urged residents to report any irregularities or delays to the ministry and directed that all environmental black spots in Iwaya—especially areas plagued by illegal trading, shanties, and waste dumping—be cleared immediately.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on E-GIS and Urban Development, Dr Olajide Babatunde, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to delivering infrastructure on schedule, revealing that contractor Tzipium Nigeria Limited would commence work in the Binuyo area once preparatory works are completed.
The inspection team also visited major drainage and canal projects, including Ajoke Street/Iya Omolere/Shogunro Village (System 2, Somolu Canal), System 3B1 Majaro–Iwaya, and Princess Street/Isale Gangan on Lagos Island.
