The Lagos State Government plans to demolish over 280 illegal structures at Mayegun Waterfront to prevent slums and protect coastal areas.
The Lagos State Government has threatened to demolish 280 illegal structures at Mayegun Waterfront. This action aims to prevent slums, distortions of the Lagos State Master Plan, and erosion of coastal areas.
In a statement titled “LASG Serves Contravention Notice on Illegal Occupants of Mayegun Waterfront Scheme,” Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development Ekundayo Alebiosu announced the issuance of notices to over 280 illegal property owners and occupants in the Eti Osa Local Government area.

The contravention notices require occupants to provide relevant documentation and approvals justifying their occupation within seven days. Failure to comply will result in a demolition notice.
The affected properties include completed, under-construction, and undeveloped lands, all lacking government authorization for construction. This finding followed a detailed assessment by the survey team from the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development.
Alebiosu urged property owners to voluntarily remove their structures before the notices expire. He also encouraged those with valid documentation to regularize their status to avoid penalties.
He warned that illegal activities along the waterfront schemes must cease immediately. The State Government will not tolerate encroachment on government properties, land, and setbacks.
Additionally, Alebiosu revealed that the state government is currently sanitizing the Okun Ajah waterfront scheme, which has also faced similar encroachments. He affirmed the government’s commitment to protecting waterfront schemes and infrastructure while ensuring the safety of lives and properties along the coastal area of Lagos State.
