LAUTECH suspends activities for two weeks after a 200-level student was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Iseyin, Oyo State

LAUTECH has suspended all academic activities for two weeks at its Iseyin campus following the tragic death of a 200-level student who was killed by a hit-and-run commercial driver on the Iseyin/Saki Road in Oyo State.

The victim, a student of the Department of Agricultural Economics, reportedly died on Friday morning after being run over by a yet-to-be-identified driver.

Witnesses said the driver fled the scene, prompting fellow students to stage a protest during which the commercial vehicle was set ablaze.

Confirming the development on Saturday, the university’s Registrar, Olayinka Balogun, described the death as heartbreaking and announced an immediate two-week suspension of activities.

“The management of LAUTECH deeply regrets to announce the tragic passing of a 200-level student of the Department of Agricultural Economics, who was fatally wounded by a hit-and-run driver in Iseyin,” Balogun said.

He added that the decision was made “in recognition of the emotional toll it has taken on our students and staff,” directing all students in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Renewable Natural Resources to proceed on break until Monday, November 24, 2025, when classes will resume.

Balogun urged students to remain calm, stay safe, and honour the memory of their deceased colleague while the university continues to liaise with relevant authorities over the incident.

The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the poor state of road safety and the need for tighter regulation around university communities.

In a related development earlier in the year, the Lagos State Government ordered the closure of a private school, Smiley Kids Montessori, after a two-year-old pupil drowned in a swimming pool.

Both incidents underscore the increasing tendency of institutions to suspend operations temporarily in response to student fatalities.
