Dr. Connor Bowman, a physician associated with the prestigious Mayo Clinic, has been indicted by a Minnesota grand jury on an elevated charge of first-degree premeditated murder in the poisoning death of his wife, Betty Bowman. The indictment replaces the initial second-degree murder charge that was filed against him in October 2023.

The 30-year-old doctor faces accusations of poisoning his 32-year-old wife after their open relationship encountered difficulties. Betty Bowman, also a pharmacist at the Mayo Clinic, died on August 20, 2023, at the St. Mary’s Hospital. Dr. Bowman was initially charged with attempting to have her body swiftly cremated and planning to benefit from a $500,000 life insurance policy.

The indictment now includes one count of first-degree premeditated murder with intent and an additional count of second-degree murder with intent. If convicted on the new charge, Dr. Bowman could face a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Betty Bowman’s illness began with symptoms resembling food poisoning, including gastrointestinal distress and dehydration. Her condition deteriorated, leading to organ failure. The medical examiner later identified the cause of death as colchicine toxicity and ruled it a homicide.

Dr. Bowman allegedly attempted to discourage an autopsy and insisted on immediate cremation, claiming her death was “natural.” The criminal complaint suggested that he may have sought to conceal his wife’s cause of death.

The investigation revealed that Dr. Bowman had conducted online searches related to colchicine, the lethal dosage for his wife’s weight, and information on obtaining sodium nitrate. He also allegedly accessed Betty’s medical records through her e-health records.

Friends of the couple reported marital difficulties, including infidelity, leading Betty Bowman to consider divorce. Dr. Bowman was linked to an emotional connection with another woman during their open relationship.

Scheduled to be arraigned on January 16, Dr. Connor Bowman faces serious legal consequences, with the new indictment intensifying the charges against him. The case has garnered attention for its tragic elements, casting a spotlight on the complexities within relationships and the impact of alleged misconduct in medical professionals.

The Bowman family, colleagues at the Mayo Clinic, and friends of Betty Bowman have expressed grief over her loss, emphasizing her dedication as a pharmacist and a pillar of support for those around her. A GoFundMe page was established to support Betty’s mother, Nancy Sponsel, as investigations continue to unfold, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding her untimely death.
