Messi MLS exit rumours grow as Inter Miami star halts contract talks, eyes competitive move before Argentina’s 2026 World Cup defence
[dropcap]M[/dropcap]essi MLS exit rumours have intensified following Inter Miami’s 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup last 16 and the superstar’s apparent decision to delay talks over a contract extension.

The Argentine icon, whose current deal with the Major League Soccer (MLS) side expires at the end of 2025, has reportedly paused negotiations for a fresh agreement.
This development has led to widespread speculation about his future and the possibility of a return to top-level European or South American football ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to respected Argentine journalist Esteban Edul, Messi is not inclined to trigger the optional 12-month extension currently embedded in his Miami contract.
Edul added that the 38-year-old is keen to test himself in a more competitive environment in preparation for Argentina’s World Cup title defence on home soil in North America.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has not publicly commented on the reports, but sources close to the player suggest he remains deeply committed to representing Argentina at one final major tournament.
As such, maintaining peak form and fitness in a demanding league is said to be a top priority.
Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 in a historic move that significantly boosted the league’s global profile. Since his arrival, he has helped the club win their first major trophy, the Leagues Cup, and has contributed to a surge in ticket sales, merchandise revenue, and international viewership.
However, Miami’s performance in the 2025 Club World Cup raised serious questions about the squad’s competitiveness on the global stage.
The heavy defeat to PSG exposed glaring weaknesses and appeared to leave Messi frustrated, especially when compared to his earlier career triumphs with Barcelona and Argentina.
Sources claim that the loss has prompted serious reflection from Messi and his inner circle. A move to a club in Europe, such as a short-term return to Barcelona or a stint in the Saudi Pro League, has been floated.
There is also interest from Brazilian and Argentine clubs seeking to capitalise on the superstar’s global appeal in the run-up to the World Cup.
One Miami fan, Miguel Rodríguez, expressed concern: “Messi brought magic to this club, but if he’s thinking about leaving, it shows the MLS still has a long way to go in terms of competitiveness.”
Club officials have not issued an official response to the reports, but internal sources believe Messi’s hesitation is strategic and rooted in his ambition to perform at his absolute best when the 2026 tournament begins.
Football analyst Mario Lopes offered his perspective: “Messi is approaching the final chapter of an extraordinary career.
He knows that competing at the highest level in the months before the World Cup could make the difference. Whether that means leaving Inter Miami or renegotiating terms with more flexibility remains to be seen.”
While the MLS remains hopeful that its most high-profile player will extend his stay, the uncertainty has prompted concerns among fans and league executives alike.
If Messi were to depart before the end of his contract, it would leave a significant void, both on the pitch and commercially.

As things stand, the possibility of Messi seeing out his Miami contract remains, but the silence from the player’s camp and the recent reports indicate that a dramatic twist could be on the horizon.
