The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, has announced that military personnel involved in the mistaken drone attack on Tundun Biri village in Kaduna State are now facing court-martial proceedings.
The tragic incident occurred on the night of December 3, 2023, when Nigerian military drones mistakenly targeted Tundun Biri village during a gathering to celebrate the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad. According to reports from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) North-West Zonal Office, the bombing commenced around 9 p.m., resulting in devastating consequences for the villagers.
Eyewitnesses recounted the horror of the attack, with the first bomb claiming the lives of over 30 individuals instantly. As rescuers rushed to aid the injured and retrieve the deceased, a subsequent bomb from a jet compounded the devastation.
As of December 5, NEMA officially reported 85 deaths and 66 individuals injured, receiving medical treatment at the Barau Dikko Hospital. However, an anonymous military source disclosed that the army had received reports of at least 126 civilian casualties.
Major General Edward Buba affirmed the military’s commitment to ensuring accountability for the tragic incident, stating that those responsible for the mistaken attack would face court-martial proceedings. This move underscores the military’s acknowledgment of the severity of the situation and its determination to uphold justice and transparency in addressing the matter.
