He urged the coroner’s court to interrogate her and 14 others who were present at Mohbad’s residence within the 48-72 hours leading to his untimely death.
Naira Marley made this appeal during a virtual testimony before Magistrate T.A. Shotobi at the Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
He insisted that investigators should look beyond the suspects initially identified by police and social media narratives.
In a statement released by his lawyer, Olusola Okuwobi, Naira Marley reiterated that he was not in Nigeria when Mohbad passed away on 12 September 2023.
He also dismissed claims of any lingering animosity between himself and his former signee.
“Naira Marley testified that at the time of Mohbad’s unfortunate death, he was out of the country,” the statement read.
“He further stated that he had no animosity towards Mohbad before his death and urged the coroner to interrogate those present at the house before the singer passed away.”
Naira Marley also accused individuals present during Mohbad’s final moments of attempting to shift blame by circulating an old video.
According to him, they were aware that Mohbad had previously apologised for the footage and had already left his record label, Marlian Music, on good terms.
His testimony comes just a week after the auxiliary nurse who treated Mohbad testified before the coroner’s court.
The nurse’s testimony raised further concerns about the circumstances surrounding the late singer’s passing.
As public pressure mounts, a group called The Concerned Nigeria Citizens in Diaspora has urged the Nigerian Police to reopen the case.
The group’s spokesperson, Victoria Janolewsky-Peters, stated:
“We urge the Nigeria Police homicide section to take into account the direction Naira Marley has pointed at during his testimony under oath.
The police should invite and interrogate Mohbad’s wife, Omowunmi, as well as his brother, Adura Aloba, who have given multiple contradictory accounts of the events.”
The group insists that a thorough re-investigation is necessary to uncover the truth behind Mohbad’s death.
