The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has announced its intention to crack down on illegal operators within the nation’s inland waterways, following the enforcement of the Inland Waterways Transportation Code 2023.
The Managing Director of NIWA, Bola Oyebamiji, made this clear in a statement released on Tuesday, emphasising that strict sanctions await those who violate the code.
The statement, signed by the Assistant General Manager of Corporate Affairs, Suleiman Makama, highlighted that any unlicensed person found operating within the inland waterways would face prosecution. “No unlicensed operator should be seen anywhere close to the Inland Waterways Transportation after Code 2023 has been gazetted,” Oyebamiji stated, stressing the importance of compliance.
He further warned that any unregistered boats found on the waterways would be impounded, urging operators to adhere strictly to safety regulations, especially as the country approaches high tidal periods. Oyebamiji reminded both operators and passengers of the mandatory requirement to wear life jackets before boarding any watercraft, and to ensure boats are not overloaded beyond approved limits.
Additionally, the NIWA chief cautioned against night travel, which remains illegal, and advised operators to refrain from consuming alcohol before and during voyages. He also urged boat operators to share safety tips with passengers and to be prepared to discharge cargo in emergencies to prevent water from getting on board.
“NIWA remains poised to ensure safety, smooth and impactful water transportation that could help bring about the desired economic growth and development of the nation,” the statement concluded.
