‘Now, he’s in trouble’ Abuja resident disarmed police officers he mistook for criminals

Clement Jack, a Twitter user, has narrated how his brother got into the custody of the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) in Akure, Ondo State, after disarming some police officers.

He said his brother thought the men might not be actual police officers, considering the circumstances surrounding the situation.

Jack said this brother was at a checkpoint in Akure on April 17 when some police officers stopped him and asked to search him.

He said after the officers searched his particulars, they requested his driver’s licence, which he gave them, but they said it was fake.

“He told them it was not fake because he had been using it for some time, yet they insisted it was fake. He requested that they track the driver’s licence ID, but they refused,” he said.

“My brother used his phone to track it and showed them, but they insisted it was fake. He pleaded with them to allow him to go because it was late, but they refused.”

Jack said his brother pleaded with the police officers from 11 pm to 12: 30 am, but they would not let them go.

He said his brother left the police officers there to report to a nearby police station, but the people he met there said they did not know the men.

“They told him that they did not assign guns to anyone from their station and that the men he described did not match the description of anyone from their station,” he said.

Jack said his brother asked the police officers in the station to follow him to the scene, but they disagreed.

He stated that his brother went back to a checkpoint which he had passed earlier to explain the issue he encountered to the officers there, but they would not follow him to the place.

“My brother got scared and thought to himself that these guys might not be actual police officers. My brother got back to the point and saw an opportunity. He disarmed these men, took his papers and driver’s licence, threw their guns away, and ran away with his car,” he said.

“The problem now is that police claim that one of the guns my brother threw in the bush to prevent them from shooting at him is missing.”

For this reason, Jack said the police picked him up from Abuja to Akure until they could arrest his brother. He said he was kept in custody until his brother showed up.

“My brother reported himself to the police and they transferred him to Akure. Since then, we have been trying to get him out. It has been 15 days now,” he said.

When FIJ called Funmilayo Odunlami, the Ondo State Public Relations Officer (PPRO), she said it was illogical that Jack’s brother disarmed police officers in uniform after mistaking them for criminals.

“Investigations have commenced, and very soon, they will be charged to court,” she said.
