The Ogun State Police command has confirmed the arrest of one Okekenu Gbadebo for allegedly punching his 37-year-old relative, Adebayo Gbenro, to death during burial arrangements in the Ijemo-Agbadu area of Abeokuta, the state capital.

According to SP Omolola Odutola, the command spokesperson, the suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident was reported at a police station in Abeokuta.

The tragic incident unfolded around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday during preparations for their late father’s burial ceremony at their family house in Ijemo-Agbadu. An argument erupted between the deceased and Gbadebo, leading to Gbadebo allegedly punching Gbenro in the chest.

Witnesses recounted that Gbenro collapsed immediately after being struck, causing chaos among family members who had gathered for the burial party scheduled for the following day.

Bose Ajani, the victim’s sister, informed the police that her brother collapsed shortly after the altercation.

SP Omolola Odutola provided further details, stating that the victim was rushed to Ijaye General Hospital where he was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty. The suspect, identified as a relative of the deceased, was subsequently arrested.

The police have initiated an investigation into the incident, and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further scrutiny. Meanwhile, the victim’s body has been deposited at the hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
