Director of Disease Control at the Ondo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (OSPHDA), Dr. Victor Adefesoye, announced the development during a stakeholders’ meeting in Akure on Monday.
The exercise, running from August 11 to 21, targets adults aged 18 and above who have tested positive for Mpox, their close contacts, and health workers who have treated them.
“The disease is already with us in Ondo State, particularly in Akoko South-West, Akoko North-West, Akoko North-East, Owo, Akure South, Akure North, Ondo East, and Odigbo,” Adefesoye said.
“We have identified targeted persons and will also vaccinate their close relatives and health workers. Stakeholders must encourage them to get vaccinated.”
Mpox, once thought to be transmitted only by monkeys, is now known to spread through various animals, human contact, and contaminated objects.
Symptoms include sores, rashes, fever, headache, and general weakness.
State Immunisation Officer, Mrs. Florence Fadiji, noted that while mild vaccine reactions may occur, the protection it offers far outweighs the risks.
Permanent Secretary of OSPHDA, Dr. Francis Akanbiemu, called the vaccination drive critical to safeguarding public health and urged community leaders to mobilise eligible residents.

Health officials have also emphasised the importance of personal and environmental hygiene in preventing further transmission.
