Labour Party’s Presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the recent tragic accidents that claimed the lives of 35 individuals in Kogi and Enugu states. In a series of posts on his official social media handle, Obi attributed these fatalities to inadequate road infrastructure and insecurity during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The accidents occurred on Sunday in Kogi, where 19 lives were lost, and on Tuesday along the Nsukka/Enugu Road in Enugu state, resulting in the death of 16 individuals. While the exact cause of these accidents is yet to be determined, Obi emphasized the critical role that road conditions and security challenges play in ensuring road safety.

Obi highlighted the urgent need to prioritize the improvement of internal road networks over ambitious mega projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Superhighway. He stressed that directing resources towards essential infrastructure projects would address the pressing issues of road safety and accessibility, ultimately saving lives.

Expressing his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and the injured, as well as to the governments and people of Kogi and Enugu states, Obi called for concerted efforts to prevent further tragedies by addressing the root causes of road accidents.
