President Bola Tinubu has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, following accusations against the Minister, Betta Edu. The minister is alleged to have authorized the disbursement of N585,198,500.00 into a personal account.

The controversy revolves around a letter purportedly signed by Minister Betta Edu, instructing the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Oluwatoyin Madein, to transfer the funds to the account of Oniyelu Bridget. The funds were designated as a grant for vulnerable groups in four states. However, the AGF clarified that while her office received the payment request, no action was taken on it.

Edu, the youngest minister in the President’s cabinet, vehemently denied the allegations, attributing them to a plot to tarnish her image. She declared her innocence, asserting that she would never engage in the embezzlement of public funds.

In response to the unfolding scandal, the Information Minister released a statement on January 7, revealing President Tinubu’s directive for a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the accuracy and validity of the reported details.

Official Statement on Investigation:

“In light of recent events, the President has directed that a thorough investigation be conducted to ascertain the accuracy and validity of the reported details. The government is determined to unravel the truth as it relates to this matter and assures that appropriate action will be taken to ensure that any breaches and infractions are identified and decisively punished, in line with the Administration’s commitment to public accountability and due process.”

The Information Minister urged Nigerians to exercise patience as the investigation unfolds, emphasizing the government’s commitment to a fair and unbiased process. He assured that the findings would be communicated transparently to the public.

The nation awaits the outcome of the investigation, which has raised concerns about financial mismanagement within the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. The case underscores the government’s dedication to public accountability and reinforces the importance of due process in handling allegations of financial impropriety.
