The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has suspended Pastor Idowu Iluyomade, the Senior Pastor of the City of David parish and head of the Apapa Family. His suspension was reportedly communicated through a letter over the weekend. Pastor Charles Kpandei, from RCCG Resurrection Parish of Region 11, has been appointed as his replacement.
Pastor Kpandei officially took over on Sunday, June 2, receiving a notably cold reception from the parish. Sources within the church revealed that RCCG officials had to consult with influential members of the City of David parish beforehand, given Pastor Iluyomade’s significant influence.
The suspension of Pastor Iluyomade, fondly known as PID, is for three months and involves the establishment of a panel to investigate various allegations against him and the parish. This move follows public criticism of the extravagant celebration of his wife Siji Iluyomade’s 60th birthday, shortly after the death of Herbert Wigwe, the then-CEO of Access Bank, who had been a major benefactor to the church.
A top RCCG pastor, preferring anonymity, clarified that the suspension decision was made by the church’s Governing Council and not Pastor Adeboye, the General Overseer. The council deemed it necessary to address concerns raised by the public regarding Pastor Iluyomade’s actions and the church’s image.
Iluyomade has been with the City of David for many years and also serves as the Special Assistant to the RCCG General Overseer on Christian Social Responsibility through His Love Foundation. It remains unclear if this role has also been affected by the suspension.
