According to the spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the suspects were intercepted while sharing ransom funds collected from the victim’s family. Upon sighting the police, the heavily armed kidnappers opened fire, prompting a gun battle in which two of the criminals were killed while others escaped into the forest with gunshot injuries.
“The Rivers State Police Command, in its sustained efforts to combat kidnapping and armed robbery, has recorded a major breakthrough,” the statement read. “Operatives successfully rescued a kidnapped female victim of Omademe Community, abducted on Friday, December 5, 2025.
The abductors had demanded a ransom of ₦1.2 million and threatened to kill the victim if payment was not made promptly.”
The police recovered part of the ransom and seized one pump-action rifle, five live cartridges, two expended cartridges, and one locally made pistol, all of which are in custody as investigations continue.
Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju commended the operatives for their bravery and dedication, assuring residents that the command remains committed to maintaining law and order.
He called on the public to provide credible information to assist in apprehending the suspects at large and recovering the remaining ransom.
Rivers State has recently seen a surge in kidnappings and violent crimes, particularly along rural corridors and major roads. In response, the police have intensified intelligence-led operations, deploying specialised units such as the Anti-Cultism Unit and tactical teams to dismantle criminal networks and rescue victims.
