Rtn. Alexander Chukwu begins presidency of Rotary Club of Ikoyi Metro with bold projects, $20,000 Foundation target, and transformative healthcare plans

It was an evening of culture, celebration, and purpose as the Rotary Club of Ikoyi Metro installed Rotarian Alexander Chukwu as its 24th president for the 2025/2026 Rotary year.

The investiture, held on 30 August at the Sir Adetokunbo Ademola Hall, Nigerian Law School, Lagos, drew Rotarians, friends, and well-wishers who gathered to witness a leadership transition laced with both ceremony and vision.

For Rtn. Chukwu, an accomplished engineer with over two decades of experience in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, the day was more than just ceremonial—it was the unveiling of an ambitious service agenda anchored on compassion, unity, and measurable impact.

“We are called not just to do good, but to unite for good; to bring people together across lines of difference, across boundaries of geography, culture and status; to serve humanity with one heart and one purpose,” he said in his acceptance speech, earning nods of approval from fellow Rotarians.

Rtn. Chukwu’s journey to this moment has been steady.

Elected as President Nominee in November 2023, he became President-Elect in November 2024, before formally assuming the gavel on July 1, 2025.

Along the way, he built a reputation for service, having worked on multiple Rotary committees—from environmental advocacy, where he was named a Planet Earth Ambassador, to chairing media and publicity for The Rotary Foundation fundraisers.

Now at the helm, Rtn. Chukwu has set bold targets: raising at least US$20,000 for The Rotary Foundation and expanding the club’s membership by 30 percent, equivalent to 17 new members. But beyond numbers, his vision is tangible.

At the heart of his agenda lies a transformative healthcare project: the full refurbishment of Wards C1 and C2 at the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos.

Once completed, the project will add forty beds, expanding the hospital’s capacity to handle emergencies and reducing preventable deaths caused by overcrowding.

“This will help reduce mortality rates in Lagos and, by extension, in Nigeria,” Rtn. Chukwu explained.

Education and economic empowerment also feature prominently.

Fifteen students are already on club-sponsored scholarships, with interschool debates energising four secondary schools.

Meanwhile, artisans who have completed vocational training but lack the tools to start work will receive start-up equipment to launch their trades; a move Chukwu describes as essential to breaking cycles of poverty in the community.

The evening also highlighted the club’s ongoing work: providing palliatives and sponsoring the release of ten inmates at Ikoyi Correctional Centre, organising breast cancer screenings, and donating wheelchairs and crutches to patients in need.

Away from Rotary, Rtn. Chukwu brings corporate weight to his presidency.

Having served as Deputy Manager of Business Assurance in NNPC’s Upstream Investment Management Services, he now heads PSC Materials and Technical Services in the same division; a career he says has sharpened his sense of accountability and leadership.

The investiture was festive yet purposeful, with cultural performances, new member inductions, generous donations, and the symbolic decoration of Chukwu as a Major Donor to The Rotary Foundation, recognising his personal contribution of at least $10,000.

As guests departed, the sense lingered that Rotary CLub of Ikoyi Metro had not just celebrated a new president, but embraced a future of bold service.

Under Rtn. Alexander Chukwu’s leadership, the club appears poised to touch more lives, unite more communities, and redefine the impact of service in Lagos and beyond.
