The former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, defeated his closest rival, Senator Aziz Yari, by 63 votes to emerge Senate President.
The All Progressives Congress National Working Committee had endorsed Akpabio as a preferred candidate for Senate President.
Consequently, two other aspirants, Orji Uzor-Kalu (APC Abia and also a former governor and Osita Izunaso (APC Imo), had stepped down from the contest following persuasions from both the Party and the President.
