Seun Kuti reacts to Buhari death, claiming no family suffered more under the ex-president than the Kutis, citing Fela and uncles’ persecution in the 1980s
Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has spoken following the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, accusing him of deeply harming the Kuti family during his military rule.

In a video posted to Instagram, Seun claimed that no Nigerian family endured more hardship under Buhari’s leadership than his own.
He referenced the persecution faced by his father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, and uncles, Dr Beko Ransome-Kuti and Koye Ransome-Kuti, in the 1980s.
“There’s nobody Buhari has offended and damaged like my family,” Seun said. “Buhari dealt with my family, but his death is not any type of justice or victory for us.”
He expressed sorrow that Fela and his uncles died before Buhari, describing them as “better men”. He also suggested, half-jokingly, that the trio might confront Buhari in the afterlife.
“My only regret is that my dad Fela, and my uncles Koye and Beko died before him. The only solace I can take from his death is that the three of them will gang up against him in the afterlife if there’s such a thing,” he said.
Buhari, who ruled as a military head of state in the 1980s before returning as a civilian president from 2015 to 2023, died on Sunday at a London clinic.

His body was returned to Nigeria and buried in Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday with full military honours.
