Eric Chelle, head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, is expected to announce his final 23-man squad this week ahead of the team’s pivotal 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
The announcement follows the release of an expanded provisional squad, which consisted of 39 players, earlier last week.
Chelle, who is set to make his debut as the Super Eagles’ manager, has kept the Nigerian football community in suspense as fans eagerly await his final selection.
This announcement comes at a critical point in the team’s World Cup qualification campaign, with Nigeria’s hopes hanging by a thread after a disappointing start to the qualifiers, having earned just three points from the first 12 available.
The provisional squad, which blends experience with youthful flair, reflects Chelle’s intention to rejuvenate a squad that has struggled with consistency.
Key players in the provisional squad include veteran captain Ahmed Musa, who is returning to the fold after a brief hiatus.
As the most-capped player in Nigerian football history, Musa’s leadership will be crucial as the Super Eagles seek to turn around their qualification campaign.
New faces in the squad include Tolu Arokodare, a striker in excellent form in Europe, and Chrisantus Uche, a promising midfielder who has impressed in the continent’s top leagues.
Both players have earned their first call-ups to the senior national team and will be keen to make an impact. Other prominent names in the squad are Fulham’s Alex Iwobi, Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface, and Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen, all of whom are expected to play vital roles in the upcoming fixtures.
The Super Eagles are facing a must-win scenario in their upcoming matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, which are scheduled for March 21 and March 25, respectively.
With just three points from four matches, Nigeria currently sits fifth in Group C, a position that leaves them in danger of missing out on a spot in the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Rwanda currently leads Group C, making the away match in Kigali a particularly difficult challenge. A win for Nigeria in this fixture is imperative if they are to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
The Zimbabwe match, taking place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, is equally crucial for securing all three points.
