In the wake of the incessant social vices now rampant in the society, mostly committed by teenagers and the influencing roles the internet play to affect them, the Special Adviser to the governor of Lagos State on Education, Tokunbo Wahab, has announced the necessity of internet regulation.
He made this known while speaking with newsmen in the state capital, Ikeja.
“With respect to internet infrastructure by kids, it is very sad; it’s a global challenge. In as much people believe that the internet should not be regulated due to the freedom of speech clause in the constitution, I believe there should be a benchmark in the regulation.
“In as much there is access to mobile phones by the kids, then there should be restrictions in respect to their ages.”
Tokunbo also touched on the discharge of parental roles, where he insisted that it is the duties of the parents to oversee their children’s day to day events, especially during the weekends when they spend more time together.
He highlighted the importance of conversation with the children as this would help build a relationship whereby they could use to monitor their children since they have the fundamental role to play on them.
“They (children) spend more time with their parents eventually, the weekends are there. We should ask our kids what they are up to. Take time to talk to your kids!
“This now goes beyond school. It is true the school will give them moral education and so on but you as a parent, you have a fundamental role to play,” he said.
