In a heartbreaking turn of events, two students from Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Makoda, lost their lives in a tragic drowning incident while attempting to cross the Thomas Dam in Kano state. The victims have been identified as Abubakar Sanusi, aged 22, and Salisu Ado, aged 21.

Confirming the distressing incident, Saminu Abdullahi, the Public Relations Officer of the State Fire Service, told newsmen on Wednesday. Abdullahi revealed that a third student, Ibrahim, aged 21, was fortunate enough to be rescued alive and is currently receiving medical attention at Dambatta General Hospital.

According to Abdullahi’s statement, the incident occurred on Tuesday, April 30th, 2024. The State Fire Department, stationed in Danbatta local government area, received an emergency call at approximately 15:06 hours from Comrade Ibrahim Muhammad, who reported the incident.

Upon receiving the distress call, fire service officers swiftly responded, arriving at the scene of the tragedy at around 15:27 hours. Upon arrival, they discovered three students from Audu Bako College of Agriculture in Makoda local government who had boarded a boat to cross the dam. Tragically, the boat capsized, leading to the drowning of Abubakar Sanusi and Salisu Ado.

However, amidst the grim situation, there was a glimmer of hope as the boat driver managed to rescue Ibrahim, one of the students, aged about 21, alive from the water.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with water transportation and the need for stringent safety measures, especially in areas prone to such accidents.

As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event, the community mourns the loss of two promising young individuals while hoping for the swift recovery of Ibrahim, the sole survivor of the ordeal.
