In a bold move to enhance the cleanliness and safety of school environments across Lagos State, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has taken decisive action by instructing the Special Squad Operatives of Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) to dislodge street traders and demolish illegal shanties.

The targeted operation focused on Ategbo Nursery and Primary School in Ijegun and the Local Government Primary School in Ikotun, following the expiration of statutory notices served on violators of environmental laws.

This aggressive enforcement seeks to curb the alarming proliferation of unauthorized structures jeopardizing the integrity of school premises.

He directed the KAI to dislodge street traders and demolish illegal shanties situated on the perimeter fence of Ategbo Nursery and Primary School at Ijegun Road, Old Garage Bus Stop, Ijegun.

Concurrently, the special squad carried out an enforcement action at the Local Government Primary School, Pako Bus Stop, Abaranje road, Ikotun, targeting the eradication of unauthorized structures and street trading activities.

These operations are in response to the expiration of statutory notices served on individuals found in clear breaches of the 2017 Lagos State Environmental Management Planning law.

The violations notably involve the construction of illegal structures along the perimeter fence and roadside, as well as the erection of structures on drainage alignments.

Commissioner Wahab’s proactive instructions align with the government’s dedication to enforcing environmental regulations and maintaining the sanctity of school environments.

The urgency in executing this enforcement stems from a troubling and unacceptable trend observed within school premises across Lagos.

He expressed deep concern over the widespread breaches compromising the well-being of students and the integrity of educational spaces, emphasizing the imperative nature of tackling this issue headlong.

“The enforcement has become expedient following an observed widespread trend that is not only worrisome but very unacceptable in our schools environment which must be tackled headlong,” he said.
