The Senate Committee on Navy held its inaugural meeting on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Committee Room 301, an event which marked the commencement of the committee’s mission to fortify and empower the Nigerian Navy, while ensuring the safeguarding of maritime interests, the security of Nigerian waters, and the protection of national sovereignty.

The committee’s chairman, His Excellency Senator Otunba Engr. ‘Gbenga Daniel, delivered a speech highlighting the vital role the Nigerian Navy plays in securing the nation’s maritime domain, regional stability, and national interests.

He acknowledged the challenges facing the navy, such as piracy, illegal fishing, arms smuggling, and oil theft, and underscored the necessity of addressing these threats with a comprehensive approach.

The Senate Committee on Navy outlined key focus areas, including modernizing the Nigerian Navy’s capabilities through investment in advanced naval assets, technologies, and infrastructure.

Additionally, the committee aims to strengthen international collaboration to combat transnational maritime threats, enhance governance, transparency, and professionalism within the Nigerian Navy, and improve the welfare of naval personnel.

Senator Daniel expressed optimism about the journey ahead, emphasising that, through collective efforts, the Nigerian Navy can become an even stronger and more capable force. The chairman called for unity among committee members, transcending political differences and personal interests to fulfill their duty to the Nigerian people.

The secretariat was tasked with providing a comprehensive report on the committee’s activities in the 9th Senate, and plans were made to familiarize committee members with the Naval leadership, formations, and organs through engagements and visits.

The Senate Committee on Navy’s commitment to enhancing Nigerian maritime security marks a crucial step towards securing the nation’s waters, protecting maritime interests, and ensuring a prosperous future for Nigeria.
