Veteran Yoruba actress Yetunde Wunmi has opened up about the personal sacrifices she made for her acting career, revealing that her passion for theatre led to the end of her marriage.
Speaking during an interview with BBC Yoruba, the 64-year-old actress, whose career spans nearly four decades, discussed the challenges she faced and how her love for acting has shaped her life.
Wunmi began her career as a stage performer in 1982 under Sunday Akinola’s ‘Feyi Kogbon’ theatre group. Reflecting on her early years, she vividly recalled how a chance encounter with the legendary actor Adelove sparked her interest in theatre.
“I cannot forget Adelove. He brought stage drama close to where I lived. Seeing him that day, dressed in white and arriving in a white car, felt like a magical moment.
I felt like I touched gold when I reached out to him,” she recounted. This event, she explained, was the moment she realised her passion for acting.
However, her dedication to her career came at a price. Wunmi revealed that her marriage ended due to her unwavering love for the stage.
Despite this, she holds no regrets. “I lost my marriage due to my love for this theatre. But I never regretted being an actress since then because God has been gracious to me,” she said.
